Intestinal health

Intestinal health concerns:

The most common digestive disorder seen by health practitioners is Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). It is estimated that 20 percent of the population has symptoms of IBS, although less than half of the people will seek help for it. Twice as many women suffer from this condition as men.

The normally rhythmic muscular contractions of the digestive tract become irregular and uncoordinated with IBS. This leads to the accumulation of mucus and toxins in the intestine due to the interference with the normal movement of food and waste material. What results is a partial obstruction of the digestive tract from this accumulated material, trapping gas and stools, which in turn causes bloating, distention, and constipation. The entire gastrointestinal tract can be affected by IBS, from the mouth to the colon.

IBS symptoms may include constipation and/or diarrhea (often alternating), abdominal pain, mucus in the stools, nausea, flatulence, bloating, anorexia, and intolerance to certain foods. Pain can be triggered by eating, and may be relieved by a bowel movement. A person with IBS may dread having to eat, due to the pain, diarrhea, nausea and sometimes the suffering from severe headaches and even vomiting. Even if a person with IBS eats normally, malnutrition may result, as nutrients are not absorbed properly. Therefore, persons suffering from IBS require as much as 30 percent more protein than normal, as well as an increased intake of minerals and trace elements, which can quickly be depleted by diarrhea.

People who have irritable bowel syndrome although not a serious illness, still suffer from painful symptoms, but most people who have it can lead active, productive lives if they change their diets, get regular exercise, and replace needed nutrients through natural digestion supplements.
