Antioxidants

Vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants

Antioxidants are molecules that play a crucial role in protecting our body against damage caused by free radicals. The latter are unstable molecules that can damage cells, thus contributing to the aging process and the onset of various diseases.

Free radicals are formed naturally in our bodies during normal metabolic processes, but their production can be increased by external factors such as pollution, smoking, radiation, and even stress. Antioxidants neutralize these free radicals, reducing their ability to cause harm.

The benefits of taking antioxidants, either through supplements or through diet, are numerous. They help protect against chronic age-related diseases, such as heart disease, cancers, and macular degeneration. They also play a role in preventing oxidative stress, a contributing factor in conditions such as arthritis, asthma, and several inflammatory diseases.

Antioxidants can be found naturally in many foods, especially colourful fruits and vegetables. For example, vitamin C, found in oranges and strawberries, and vitamin E, found in almonds and avocados, are both powerful antioxidants. Other sources include flavonoids in green tea, resveratrol in red wine, and lycopene in tomatoes.

Antioxidant supplementation is very beneficial, especially for people who do not regularly consume a variety of fruits and vegetables. It is generally recommended to obtain these nutrients primarily through a balanced diet.
