Immune health, Cold, Flu

Cold, flu and immune health concerns:

Disease-causing microorganisms are fought off by the immune system that sets in place the healing process. The endless variety of aggressors to the body are fought by the immune system, from cuts and scrapes to the myriad of viruses that are present these days. How our immune system functions in relation to the aging process, may have more impact than the actual passage of time. When the immune system is weakened, the result can be an increased susceptibility to virtually every type of illness. Common signs of a weakening of the immune system function include fatigue, listlessness, inflammation, slow wound healing, repeated infections, allergic reactions, chronic diarrhea, and infections that represent an overgrowth of some normally present organism, such as oral thrush, systemic candidiasis, or vaginal yeast infections.

A system of complex interactions is how we could define the immune system, unlike other bodily systems, since it is not a group of physical structures. The interactions involve many different organs, structures, and substances, among them white blood cells, bone marrow, the lymphatic vessels and organs, structures and substances, among them white blood cells, bone marrow, the lymphatic system and organs, specialized cells found in various body tissues, and specialized substances called serum factors that are present in the blood. All these components work together to protect the body, ideally, against infection and disease.

So many elements around in the environment we live in today can reap havoc on our immune system’s defensive abilities. Whether it be the chemicals in the household cleaners we use or the over-consumption of antibiotics and other drugs, and perhaps it’s the antibiotics, pesticides and scores of additives present in the food we eat. The exposure to environmental pollutants all place a strain on the immune system. One more culprit that adversely affects the immune system is stress.

Some recommendations:

  • The immune system requires adequate amounts of nutrients, the principal ones are: vitamins A, C, and E.
