Measles and rubella are viral infections that attack the respiratory system, eyes and skin. Although they are early childhood diseases, adults can also become infected. Measles is highly contagious and spreads easily by coughing and sneezing.
The disease usually occurs 7 to 14 days after exposure to the virus. Early symptoms include fever, cough, sneezing, runny nose and redness of the eyes (which may be sensitive to light). After four or five days, a koplik’s eruption (small red dots with white center) appears, beginning on the face and neck, gradually extending down over the entire body.
